Pikas and Giant Flying Squirrels of the Himalayan Foothills

Come and discover the charming small creatures living in the Pakistan Himalayas. The rocky valleys and high-altitude plateaus (between 2,000m and 4,000m) are home to two species of pikas: Royle's Pika and the Large-eared Pika. At night, we will also take on the challenge of spotting two species of giant flying squirrels: the Red Giant Flying Squirrel and the Kashmir Giant Flying Squirrel.

Itinerary

01
Islamabad – Skardu
Take a domestic flight from Islamabad to Skardu.

Skardu – Satpara Lake – Deosai Plains
In the morning, search for Royle's Pikas by the shores of Satpara Lake. Later, head to the Deosai Plains (4,000m) to observe Long-tailed Marmots and various bird species. If the weather is clear, you can enjoy a stunning view of Nanga Parbat, the world’s 9th highest peak.

Skardu – Basho Valley
Travel by 4WD to Basho Valley. Observe Large-eared Pikas inhabiting the rocky areas, and search for giant flying squirrels after dark.

Basho Valley – Babusar Pass – Batakundi
Return to the main highway by 4WD and drive along the Indus River toward Chilas. Cross the Babusar Pass to reach Batakundi. Enjoy birdwatching along the mountain pass during the journey.

Batakundi – Lulusar-Dudipatsar National Park – Shogran
Search for pikas at Lulusar Lake and Saif-ul-Muluk Lake. Afterward, proceed to Shogran. In the evening, we will look for the Red Giant and Woolly Flying Squirrels.

Shogran – Islamabad
Search for pikas near Shogran in the morning, then drive back to Islamabad.

* Nature Observation: This tour focuses on wildlife in their natural habitat. Please note that sightings of the animals mentioned in the itinerary or photos are not guaranteed.

* Altitude: The Deosai Plains sit at 4,000m - 4,200m, and some walking paths may reach altitudes above 4,200m.

* Weather: Even in summer, temperatures drop significantly in the mornings and evenings. Please ensure you bring adequate cold-weather clothing.
